Three Australian bars land on The World’s 50 Best Bars list

The best and brightest of global bar industry are here in Madrid for the 2024 edition of The World’s 50 Best Bars. With it comes literally hundreds of guest shifts, local bars busy from open to close, and sightings of the bar world’s brightest stars.

Oh, and there’s a big gala event for 1,300 people to announce the 50 best bars in the world.

It’s the big list that attracts eyeballs across the globe, and in 2024, three Australian bars make the list.

After landing at 61 on the long list in 2023, Melbourne bar Byrdi marked its first entry to the list, landing at 35 - a great jump for one the country’s finest bars.

Maybe Sammy marks its sixth straight appearance on the list, landing at 26 - a huge result and one that is unparalleled in Australia.

Melbourne bar Caretaker’s Cottage — after debuting at number 23 last year — returned to the list, landing at number 21 and taking out the title of the best bar in Australasia, as well the Michter’s Art of Hospitality award - a pretty damn fine haul for the night.

The number one spot on the list — the best bar in the world, if you will — went to Handshake Speakeasy from Mexico City.

Friend of Boothby and the Drinks At Work podcast, Ryan Chetiyawardana picked up the award for best menu design for his bar Lyaness in London.
