World's 50 Best Bars

These three Australian bars made the World’s 50 Best Bars List

The World’s 50 Best Bars 2020 was announced overnight in London, and three Australian bars — all from Sydney — have made the cut.

2020 has been a year. Covid. Lockdowns. Closed borders. A disputed US election. State of Origin in November.

But in some good news, The World’s 50 Best Bars 2020 was announced overnight in London, and three Australian bars — all from Sydney — have made the cut.

Maybe Sammy is the highest placed Australian bar on the list, coming in at number 11. They were the only Australian bar to make the 50 Best last year, when they landed at 43 on the list. Maybe Sammy had previously been announced as the 2020 winners of Art of Hospitality award, and this year again they took out the Best Bar in Australasia.

Sydney cocktail bar, Bulletin Place, made its return to the top 50 this year, landing at 39.

One of Australia’s most talked about bars — and a favourite of ours here at Boothby — is Cantina OK! The small bar specialising in mezcal made its debut on the 50 Best list this year, landing at 28.

There were no bars in from Melbourne making the 50 Best list this year; instead, there were only four Australian bars — all of which are in Melbourne — featured on the previously announced 51-100 list: The Everleigh (73), Byrdi (80), Above Board (84), Black Pearl (98).

Last year’s number one bar, Dante, slipped to number two in the list this year, as Connaught Bar in London took out the World’s Best Bar this year.

The Campari One To Watch award was won by Dubai’s Galaxy Bar, which means that they believe the bar has the best shot at breaking onto the 50 Best list proper.

The Industry Icon Awards went to USA-based bartender and activist, Ashtin Berry.

The World’s 50 Best Bars is voted for by an international academy consisting of more than 540 bartenders, operators, drinks writers and other industry experts. The pandemic this year meant that the ceremony had to go virtual, and was shown live on The World’s 50 Best Bars social media channels.
